How much does it cost to change a TNB account name?

For a new application, there are 2 cost components that you need to pay:

• Payment to TNB
  i. Deposit / Security deposit
  ii. Stamp duty RM 10
  iii. TNB charge RM 3
  (The deposit amount varies according to the type of premises / you may refer to the TNB price table prepared based on house type)

HOW TO CHANGE NAME | Change of Tenancy (COT)

The process of changing a TNB account holder’s name is called Change of Tenancy (COT) in the TNB system.
It is usually done when a new homeowner wants to use the account under their own name, or when changing from a company name to an individual name, and vice versa. This situation commonly occurs for customers who have just rented or purchased a house, including subsale houses, auction houses, or new houses.

Change of an existing TNB account name.
A change of account name is considered the opening of a new account by a customer who is moving into a premises with an existing electricity supply.

You may apply for a Change of Tenancy when purchasing a house from a previous owner, or if you are a tenant who wishes to register the electricity account under your own name.

There are 2 WAYS to change a TNB account name

1. The applicant may go directly to any TNB KEDAI TENAGA nationwide, whether near or far, to make the name change. The applicant must be present at TNB for thumbprint verification.

2. The applicant may use the MYTNB Portal for a more convenient option.

What happens to the previous account holder after the name change?

For the previous account holder, if the applicant knows them, they may inform the former account holder to submit their bank account number to TNB for the refund of the deposit.
Alternatively, TNB will contact and trace the previous account holder to update their details for the deposit refund.

Change TNB Name Online for Tenant or New Owner

Among the many important matters that should not be taken lightly, one of them—when you own or purchase a new house—is to change the TNB customer name from the previous owner.

The TNB customer name registered with TNB is usually under the former owner or the previous tenant. This name change must be done to avoid any issues that may arise in the future.

How to change the TNB name online to a new tenant or owner.

   • or Certificate of Incorporation on Change of Company Name (Form 13) and Managing Director / Company Directors (Form 49); or certificate of registration for associations, cooperatives, or law firms

Advantages of Changing the TNB Meter Name

1. Electricity bills under the actual owner/tenant’s name
   – The name on the bill matches the person living in or using the electricity
   – Avoid bills being issued under the previous owner’s name

2. Avoid old arrears being “attached” to you
   If the meter is still under another person’s name, TNB may withhold applications if there are outstanding arrears.
   By changing the name:
   ✔ Old arrears are not linked to you
   ✔ The new account is completely clean

3. Better safety & clearer official records
   – TNB knows who the legitimate user is
   – Easier handling of emergencies, faults, or TNB site visits
   – Avoid misunderstandings between owner & tenant

4. Electricity deposit will be under your name
   – The previous deposit will be refunded to the former account holder
   – The new deposit belongs to you and will be refunded when the account is closed

5. Reduce legal risks & disputes
   If an electrical accident or safety issue occurs, TNB will refer to the account holder.
   It is safer when the account is under your own name.

6. Clear responsibility for electricity bills
   Changing the name to the tenant means all responsibility for usage and bill payment is transferred to the tenant.
   This prevents the owner from being burdened with unpaid bills if the tenant fails to pay.

   Owners do not need to worry if tenants fail to pay bills, as liability lies with the tenant once the account name is changed.

8. Usage monitoring
   Owners can still monitor electricity usage and the tenant’s monthly payments from time to time via the myTNB portal and app.

9. Risk reduction
   Reduces the risk of owners having to bear tenants’ electricity debts, especially in cases involving issues such as meter tampering.

2. Enter your Email Address.

3. Enter your Password.

4. Click Login.

5. After logging in, select I am moving in. Get me Started!

6. Fill in the premises address based on the nearest electricity bill.

7. The premises information will be displayed.

8. Check all your information and click Next.

9. Fill in the required related information.

10. Enter your Personal Details completely.

11. Please upload the relevant documents.

12. Tick all the checkboxes.

13. Click Submit.

14. The application process and document submission are completed.

15. After your application is reviewed and approved by TNB, you will receive an email containing a Demand Letter from TNB.

16. This letter provides payment details.

17. You may make payment as instructed, either at a TNB counter or online via FPX, Credit Card, or Debit Card.

18. After payment, you will receive an email confirmation and account approval.

19. Completed.

How to Change a TNB Account Name at the Counter

If you use this method, you need to personally visit the nearest TNB branch.

You must prepare the required documents.
Then go to the TNB shop or counter, request the TNB name change form, fill in the form, and submit it back to the counter officer.

Make the required payment to ensure the name change process is successful.
