APPLY FOR TNB METER – TEMPORARY SUPPLY

TNB METER APPLICATION – APPROVAL FIRST, PAYMENT LATER

APPLY FOR TNB METER – TEMPORARY SUPPLY

Make sure your application is under the correct category. A Temporary Supply meter is treated the same as a New Meter / Newly Built application, for premises that have never had a meter or do not have any TNB cable. If the premises previously had a meter, you must apply under Existing / Existing Meter.

A Temporary Supply meter application is mandatory to be processed through a contractor. This means only a contractor can submit the application, and it cannot be done by the applicant individually.

To apply for a Temporary Supply with TNB, it is usually used for construction projects, temporary events, night market sites, or short-term works that require electricity.
The process is similar to a normal meter application, but the category is Temporary Electricity Supply.

💡 Important Tips:
Ensure you use a TNB-registered electrical contractor (Competent Person) – you may directly contact Bani Venture.

  • The application process usually takes 5–21 working days, depending on location and supply readiness.

  • Temporary supply has a limited duration (e.g. 3 months, 6 months, or one year) and can be extended if required.

  • Meter charges fall under the shop / commercial category.

  • Temporary meter specifications are different from permanent meter applications, and specifications are set according to TNB requirements for each area. Most temporary meter boards must be installed on a pole or underground, and proper electrical installation works are mandatory.

  • A temporary meter is not allowed to be converted into a permanent meter. The temporary meter must be terminated, and a new permanent meter application must be submitted.

Steps to Apply for TNB Temporary Supply

1. Site & Document Preparation and Submission

  • The site must be ready for meter application, with completed wiring, meter board, and related works.

  • Prepare all documents required by TNB.

2. TNB Evaluation Process

  • TNB will review the documents and site location.

  • If complete, TNB will issue a quotation (connection charges + deposit).
The deposit is higher than a normal meter due to the short-term usage.

  • Payment of the deposit and charges must be made before connection works begin.

3. Temporary Meter Installation

  • The electrical contractor will install the temporary pole/meter setup.

  • TNB will connect the supply after the installation passes inspection.

    4. Termination

  • After the project or event ends, the applicant must inform TNB to terminate the temporary supply.

  • The deposit will be refunded after the final bill is settled.

For new applications, there are 2 cost components that you need to pay

  1. Payment to TNB
    i. Deposit / Security deposit
    ii. Consumer Connection Charge (CSP)
    iii. Stamp duty
(you may refer to the TNB price table that I have prepared according to house type)

  2. Contractor management charges

TNB METER PAYMENT RATES – NEW APPLICATION

TNB payment rates can be referred to in the table below. Payments to TNB can be made directly to TNB without going through the contractor. Only the contractor’s charges need to be paid directly to the contractor after approval. Our company is a registered electrical contractor under the Energy Commission (ST), CIDB, and TNB.

Note: The prices below are for new premises that have never had a meter. Contractor management charges are not included.

The consumer connection charge for underground supply is RM 1,700, and the rate is the same for 1 phase and 3 phase.

In conclusion, you need to plan carefully. In my opinion, if you are applying for a supply for a house with a short construction period, you should also consider whether it is worth it or not.

Example: for SPNB houses, applying for a temporary meter is not worthwhile.

  • Getting the meter can sometimes take up to a month.

  • A temporary meter cannot be converted into a permanent meter; it must be terminated and a new permanent meter applied for.

  • The construction period for SPNB houses is not long.

  • There is a lot of non-recoverable cost — a temporary meter standby can be around RM2,000, with monthly charges that are higher because it is under commercial rates.

A better suggestion is to use a generator for construction work or use electricity from a nearby neighbour, if possible.

TNB Meter Application Process

Site Visit – Document Handover – Submit – Approved – Payment – Installation – COMPLETED

The process for a new meter application depends on the type of application.

  • ESTIMATEDTemporary Supply Meter Application. The application must be submitted under estimated, where a TNB officer is required to visit the site first before approval is granted to the applicant. The processing time may be longer than an express application.

  • The Consumer Connection Charge (CSP) must be paid to TNB after the application is approved. The charges imposed depend on the scope of installation, whether it is an overhead line (from pole to meter board) or an underground line. For overhead lines, the pole cost is free, and no additional pole charges are imposed by TNB. Applications for overhead and underground cables are priced differently.

    Domestic / Residential

  • 1 Phase

    New – RM 450 (Overhead)
    RM 1,700 (Underground)

  • Domestic 3 Phase

New and upgrade – RM 750 (Overhead)
    RM 1,700 (Underground)

  • Commercial 1 Phase

    New – RM 450

  • Commercial 3 Phase

New and upgrade – RM 1,700

  • The meter security deposit must also be paid to TNB after the electricity connection is completed by TNB. The deposit amount depends on the type of premises, whether it uses a 1-phase or 3-phase meter. For commercial premises, the deposit depends on the maximum demand requirement. The deposit is refundable if the user closes the account.

  • Stamp duty RM10 — this usually indicates that the stamped document falls under a fixed-rate category (not based on cash value such as a property sale and purchase).

Four utility meters mounted on a brick wall, connected by a series of pipes and fittings. The scene is dimly lit, casting shadows on the wall and the meters.

An analog utility meter is mounted on the exterior wall of a building. In front of the meter, there is a lush green shrub with broad leaves. The wall is covered with white siding, creating a clean and orderly background.
