HOW TO UPGRADE OR DOWNGRADE A TNB METER

Application to upgrade or downgrade your TNB electricity meter.

Increase Your Electrical Capacity by Upgrading to a 3-Phase Meter

Is your electricity usage increasing? Do your appliances frequently cause tripping or unstable voltage? It may be time to consider upgrading from a 1-phase meter to a 3-phase meter.

Documents Required for TNB Meter Upgrade
Applications starting from the end of 2016 are processed fully online (ON-LINE).

Residential House – Individual Applicant

  1. Copy of applicant’s identity card

  2. Copy of electricity bill (ensure the bill number is clearly visible)

Commercial Shop – Company Applicant

  1. Copy of SSM documents, Form 9 or Form D, company information

  2. Copy of Managing Director’s identity card

  3. Copy of electricity bill (ensure the bill number is clearly visible)

Timeframe for TNB Meter Upgrade

For upgrade applications, the processing time is generally longer, depending on the area. Typically, it takes around 1–3 weeks, including a site estimation by a TNB officer and the installation of cables and a 3-phase meter.
Applicants can monitor the application progress via MyTNB – Check Application Status.

Procedure to Upgrade to 3 Phase or Downgrade to 1 Phase

  1. Prepare a new meter board, either 3 phase or 1 phase, or we can arrange it for you.

  2. Appoint a licensed electrical contractor and contact the contractor.

  3. The contractor conducts a site visit.

  4. The contractor submits the application to TNB.

  5. TNB conducts a site visit and performs calculations.

  6. TNB issues the charges to the applicant.

  7. The customer/applicant makes payment.

  8. TNB installs the meter and COMPLETED.

The premises must upgrade the meter board, 3-phase DB, and related components before applying for the upgrade to TNB. A TNB officer will visit the premises to assess and approve the application. Once approved, the applicant must make payment before TNB proceeds with the installation of the 3-phase cable and meter. COMPLETED.


Tips for Upgrading a TNB Meter

If the premises are not under the homeowner’s name, the TNB account must be changed to the correct name first, so that any additional deposit paid can be refunded when vacating the premises.

SUMMARY OF TNB METER UPGRADE OR DOWNGRADE

  1. TNB meter upgrade applications must be processed through a contractor.

  2. A 3-phase meter board and 3-phase DB must be prepared before submitting the upgrade application to TNB.

  3. Additional deposit + stamp duty must be paid according to the type of premises as determined by TNB upon approval. The applicant will receive an email notification once TNB approves the application.

  4. Installation period is 1–30 working days, including the time for TNB officers to carry out site estimation.

How Much Does It Cost to Upgrade to 3 Phase or Downgrade to 1 Phase?

There are 3 types of charges you need to know:

1. Site Work Costs (Upgrade/Downgrade Works)
Charges for changing the meter board, DB, meter panel, and related works for an upgrade depend on site conditions.
Typically RM 1xxx – RM 3xxx, and may be higher if the installation is underground.

2. TNB Charges (Connection, Deposit & Stamp RM 10)
TNB charges depend on the existing deposit and type of connection. You will receive a TNB invoice after approval.

Consumer Connection Charge (CSP): Calculated based on the difference from the existing 1-phase supply.

Overhead line (3 Phase): RM 750
Overhead line (1 Phase): RM 450

Underground line (1 Phase & 3 Phase): up to RM 1,700

3-Phase Meter Deposit: Between RM 400 to RM 1,600, depending on the type of premises and electrical demand

Example 1: Upgrade Cost for a 2-Storey Terrace House

Previous 1-Phase Payment
Deposit: RM 500
Connection charge: RM 450

3-Phase Upgrade Payment

Standard connection charge for new 3-phase overhead supply: RM 750
Connection charge already paid for existing 1-phase overhead supply: RM 450

RM 750 – RM 450 = RM 300
Additional CSP payable: RM 300

Deposit
New 3-phase deposit for a terrace house: RM 700
Existing 1-phase deposit paid: RM 500

RM 700 – RM 500 = RM 200
Additional deposit payable: RM 200

Stamp Duty: RM 10

Total Payment to TNB:
RM 300 (CSP)
RM 200 (Deposit)
RM 10 (Stamp)
= RM 510

* This amount does not include additional charges that may be imposed for extra works required, such as compliance with local council requirements for Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), milling, or road reinstatement works.

* For all load change applications, additional security deposit may be required due to the expected increase in electricity bills. Please check with any TNB Kedai Tenaga for more details on charges related to load changes.

3. Electrical Contractor Charges (Registration & Management)

• Charges by a registered electrical contractor (application forms, testing, official submission):
• Typically between RM 200 to RM 750, depending on job complexity and location
